Second Briefing - April 2011

We headed to Gilwell, London, for our second briefing this weekend!

After several phone conferences and lots of emails we had a presentation all sorted for Saturday morning and some idea of our entertainment for Saturday Evening!

Friday evening was spent rehearsing both our presentation and our dance.

Saturday morning everyone gave their presentations. We used the 10minutes to try out some games that taught and enforced English. The other GOLDies pretended they were 7-11 with basic English. We introduced four colours and balloons to match. In small teams they practiced these by saying the name of the colour each time they hit a balloon. We then reinforced this with a parachute game, each time the parachute was thrown up we called a colour, those holding that colour on the parachute ran underneath! We finished up with a small group evaluation using smily face cards!

Saturday afternoon we learnt about TEFL and tried out some games which help teach and develop English skills - thanks Rosemary!! We all learnt lots and we are now looking forward to seeing if we can adapt other games we already use to help develop English skills!

Saturday evening each group gave some entertainment. Team Sri Lanka did a dance, choreographed by Vanessa, to Jai-ho and Fame. It involved learning lots of dance moves, costume changes, lots of giggling and dancing on a taxi!!

The rest of the evening was spent catching up with other teams and sleeping!!

Sunday morning we went to trainings on photography and video skills, first aid and accounts to help us with our individual roles before, during and after our project.

Some of the group Leaders gave us hints and ideas on how to make packing easier, and we all thought about the sorts of things we would need to take (especially those going to countries where their bags might get lost en-route!)

The weekend ended with a 'This is your Life' for Charlotte, the GOLD Co-ordinator whos role ends this summer!

We are all now starting to think about the sort of activities and games we can use to teach English to people of all ages and abilities.
